I am the high school cheerleading coach. Our school has two gymnasiums because the high school and middle school are linked. The gyms are not similar at all though. The middle school gym is way smaller and older. The stereo system barely works. Also it does not have any air conditioning. Another issue is that all of our cheerleading mats are in the high school gym. Because of these reasons, I try to get our practices in the high school gym. It is a constant fight with the basketball and volleyball coaches though. I am always trying to get a time slot in the better gym. Since every sport wants to have AC, it is next to impossible to get in there. What really angers me is when the volleyball coach tells me that my girls don’t need AC. Cheerleading is extremely physical. The girls stunt, dance and do tumbling during the practice. They get hot and sweaty like any other sport. Doing stunts with sweaty hands is dangerous. Tumbling when you are overheating can be scary. So the air conditioning equipment is necessary to keep us at a reasonable temperature. The volleyball coach really should be able to give up the AC. The middle school gym has equipment for them. Also the team travels for games. Not every school has AC in the gym. It would be good for the volleyball team to get used to not always having AC. The coach never likes when I bring that up though. One of these days we are going to get into a fight over AC.
