I like to be as frugal and as thrifty as anyone possibly can. I cut out coupons from newspapers and many online ads, I like to cook all of our food homemade and I also enjoy riding my bicycle to work a handful of times throughout the month to save cash on gas. But my achilles heel with how I spend money is definitely how often I run my air conditioning system. My electricity bill is just out of control right now and has been all through the summer. I know I’m as mindful as I can be about only using my lights when I know I have to use them as well as leaving outlets free of plugs and turning off all unused appliances around the house. But despite my best efforts, I just can’t handle life in our beach house at any temperature higher than 74 degrees. I have no issue with this most of the year when the weather is much cooler, but I just can’t imagine how to get the electric bill down during the summer no matter the climate. But our close friend Tom gets by with just a window AC for his entire three bedroom apartment. He says it’s all he ever needs, aside from having a handful of fans on hand as well as owning some “good windows,” as he says. My mother in law is usually the same–she lives in the same neighborhood as Tom and she also manages with just a single window AC as well as some ceiling fans in her small house. The only thing I can really surmise is that everyone is different as well as having different needs when it comes to how they heat and cool their homes. I’m thrifty with everything else I buy even if I end up spending more than I’d like on cranking my AC down consistently 24/7. But it’s what makes me comfortable that matters, and that’s worth any money I save from anything else.
