Just over ten years ago, I decided to pursue a field that several thought was just too risky. I strongly desired to become a pilot! Whether I was in the cockpit of a commercial aircraft or private jet did not matter to me. My only stipulation was that I would do what I loved. When I passed all my flight tests I was excited to finally start working. However, the only jobs that seemed to be open were for helicopter pilots and I was in fixed wing. I thought I would go for it anyway. After that first fateful flight, I liked it even more than flying fixed wing planes. Now I could not be happier with my position. I fly helicopters for search and rescue missions with emergency doctors as my passengers. It is a high intensity job, but that is how I like to work. Even though I am seated most of the time, the helicopter is so easy on my body. For example, there is a wonderful Heating and Air Conditioning system on board… Even though the doors are often open, this equipment keeps me and my passengers warm, or cool, despite the outside air flowing in. The HVAC unit must be quite strong and efficient for that to happen! No matter what I happen to be doing at any given time, it is so simple to reach over and adjust the thermostat. I am comfortable within minutes of the adjustments I make. There are other features that maximize my comfort besides this HVAC system as well. There are power seats to position me correctly in order to stay comfortable throughout the flight. Not only do I like my job, but I like my helicopter, too!
